Mindful Tech
Zoe Warren | Longer Read
Who are you closest to all day long, who do you wake up next to and grab as your eyes open and gaze at intently before you drift off.. who holds your gaze as you try to do other things, grips your hand, touches you constantly through the day...
That must be love?
That must be someone great?
If I was to be totally honest that someone is my phone..... anyone else with me on this? Ask yourself really honestly?!
Phones are incredible things and can offer a wealth of information, communication and support to us all around the globe however we need to use our tech in a mindful way. Let's make sure that we use our tech rather than let our tech use us..
Billions of dollars are spent making our phones as addictive as possible. When we pick them up and use them we get a little hit of dopamine, the feel good chemical that floods the brain. However as time goes on we need more and more of the ‘thing’ (phone, chocolate, alcohol, internet shopping, whatever is your fix!) to give us the same satisfying effect and end up with less control over our actions than we really think. Are we looking at positive, informative things that are supporting us or are we heading down the rabbit hole due to boredom? Are we connecting to the people who love us the most, those who are actually around us or are we pushing them away to live in the online world?
Let’s change phones or tech being no 1 in our lives and bump them down the list just a little bit. Can we do one or two of the following:
Ask yourself why you are picking it up each time so it is a conscious choice
Turn off your notifications
Leave it behind for the odd walk, run or coffee with a friend
Have it off the table when with others
Don’t have it near you for meal times
Leave them in the kitchen overnight
Maybe have a tech free day at the weekend with your family or friends
Only follow positive people on social media keep it a kind and safe environment
Let’s teach the next generation by example how to honour the people who are right there with them and how to make healthy choices about how they spend their time.
So hope that helps to remind you just to question the habits we are all in and maybe make little tweaks to find more balance and happiness.
